Bad Angel Rule #56
Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is.
Having trouble running consistently? Sign up for a race. When you do, you’ll automatically have an end date and a mileage goal to reach. Boom.
Personally, I’m in a constant state of training. I need a goal to keep motivated. A goal other than, say, fitting into my jeans. It’s hard to drag my butt out of bed every Saturday morning (especially when there’s snow on the ground), and I need a little extra motivation. If the fact that you paid good money for a race doesn’t motivate you, the public humiliation of inadequately preparing for a race should do the trick.
So, coming off the St. Louis Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon last weekend, I signed up for the Flying Pig half mary in May. For me, the 13.1 miles of a halfer is the perfect distance for maintaining fitness. When you sign up for a whole, you’re signing up for a lifestyle change (and one that I strongly believe everyone should experience at least once). But a half marathon requires just a little bit of discipline and a steady and easy ramp up of mileage.
Plus, if you’ve got a great race like The Pig in your home town, why wouldn’t you want to be a part of it?
Spring races are calling. Get on it. Now. – Aidz
