Shhh … I’m Running.
I love to talk — a lot. And there are times when I’m running that talking is exactly what I want (and need) to do, but then there are times when I just need silence. Normally, this is when I’m pushing myself to go faster, or if the run is inexplicably hard. Or, I just need to zone out. Either way, it’s great to have a running partner who understands and allows for this comfortable silence.
My husband never talks unless he is pacing me and announcing the mile splits. He’s also responsible for making my runs a little challenging, so talking isn’t an option, anyway.
But over the years, I have had several partners who are happy to oblige my quiet time. And honestly, I think they like the break as well. Two runners, lost in thought, quietly supporting one another. I can’t think of anything better. – Amie

I hear you. I run with a club and a running buddy, so we talk a lot. But as you say there are times when you need to go silent and focus. I’ve run races where everyone is talkative and I’ve run races where hardly anyone says a word.
While I enjoy being social while I run, I also enjoy running alone and getting deep into my own head. Sometimes I am able to clear my mind and almost meditate, other times I am able to focus and think intensely for a long period about something that’s important to me at the time.
Great blog.
