Head Gear

You guys already know how we feel about running hats in general, so now it’s time to give you the lowdown on a few running hats and visors we’ve tried, to varying degrees of success.

The Good

Athleta Tempo Visor/Tempo Run Cap: I have one of each, and both are solid choices. Wicking material, lightweight, reflective and the velcro adjustment is a cinch. They also come in some rad, bold colors if you’re feeling saucy. (Personally, I stick with white running caps because I find that the darker colors show salty sweat stains more readily.)

Brooks Nightlife Mesh Hat: Originally, I got this hat because my neighbor informed me that he almost ran over me with his car because he couldn’t see me at night. I love this hat so much, though, that I wear it all times of the day. It fits nicely, breathes well and the reflectors/fluorescent accents aren’t overwhelming.

The Best

My beloved adidas visor provided much-needed shade during my first Chicago Marathon.

adidas adiZero Visor: It’s my race day go-to and has taken me through a handful of half marathons and two full marathons. I’ve washed and worn it so much, the velcro is starting to become un-velcro-y. Might be time to retire it and buy a new one.

Fun Is running cap: There it was, like a shining beacon of hope in my goodie bag for the North Shore Half Marathon. This promotional giveaway from Running Away Multisport has turned out to be the best race swag I’ve ever gotten. Fits perfectly, breathes well and looks rad. Fun Is is a sporting goods wholesaler in the Chicago area, and RAM uses them to produce most of their promotional items. I don’t know where else you can get them, but if you see one, snatch it up immediately.

The Ugly

Nike Daybreak Running Hat: It comes down too far over my ears, and although the mesh breathes fairly well, it still feels like I’m wearing a trucker cap.

Asics Everyday Run Visor: Not a fan. The strip across the forehead is so thick that it feels like a terrycloth robe on my head. The velcro in the back is hard to adjust, and the plastic thinger you loop the strap through always moves around. I’ll still wear it in a pinch, but I’d never buy another one.

As with all running gear, we’re always on the lookout for the next great thing. So, who among you has some running hat/visor recommendations? We’re all ears. — Mags and Aidz
