What I Did on My Taper Vacation
Or rather, what I’m GOING to do during my three-week taper until the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 7.
Some things I’m looking forward to …
Running less! Duh, that’s what tapering means. But really think about that. Finally, my body will start to heal and I’ll get back more of the joy of running after weeks of often gutting out the miles when I really, really don’t feel like it.
Sleeping more! Shorter mid-week runs equal earlier dinners and earlier showers and earlier bedtime.
Making marathon weekend plans! There are spectators to coordinate and post-race parties (re: eating) to arrange. There are Shot Bloks to stock up on and race outfits to pick out. Funtimes.
Crying at my desk! During the final weeks before the marathon, it is customary for me to use my break time to search YouTube for inspirational running videos … and then sob uncontrollably. There’s a potent cocktail of worry, excitement, doubt, happiness and exhaustion in those tears. AND I JUST CAN’T HELP MYSELF. It’s what I do.
